Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

About our fellowship

Six pediatric emergency fellows stand together in front of a helicopter.Thank you for taking the time to visit our website and to learn more about our fellowship training program. More than 48,000 children annually are cared for at our medical facility, which provides ample opportunities for our fellows. The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at UMMC began in 2016. We currently accept two fellows per year.

Children's Emergency Services, the emergency medicine program at Children's of Mississippi, assesses and treats children acutely ill or injured children aged 18 and under. Our Children's Emergency Services, includes the Col. Harland Sanders Children's Emergency Department and the Selby and Richard McRae Children's Trauma Unit, and are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are staffed by physicians who are board certified in pediatric emergency medicine, emergency medicine, and/or general pediatrics. All pediatric subspecialists are available for consultation.

As the only children's hospital in Mississippi, we have a diverse patient population with a wide range of patient care experiences. Our curriculum provides comprehensive training in the field of emergency medicine, opportunities to grow as a physician scientist, and training in the art of being an educator. You will work in a collaborative team that includes attendings, nurse practitioners, nurses and support staff.

Additionally, fellows work closely with a faculty mentor to develop a basic science or clinical research project to help establish skills in the field of research and discovery. You will have opportunities to participate in administrative and quality improvement activities to foster improvements in systems within the hospital. There are weekly educational conferences specifically designed for the fellow to optimize subspecialty board preparation.

Thank you so much for your interest in our pediatric emergency medicine fellowship program!  We are the pediatric ED for the only pediatric hospital in the state.  As the only tertiary site in the state, our fellows will care for the entire spectrum of pediatric emergencies.  Fellows will treat congenital and acquired cardiac pathologies and pivot to treat patients in crisis from their metabolic disorders.  Fellows will encounter new cancer diagnoses and emergent neurosurgical complications.  Through these varied experiences, we will train fellows to be able to go anywhere in the country and have a strong grasp of the management of any pathology they encounter.

PEM is a widely varied field with a number of areas in which to achieve expertise.  Trauma, pre-hospital care, ultrasound, simulation, medical education, and the list goes on!  In our fellowship program, we strive to expand our trainees’ knowledge in every one of these branches.  As the only pediatric trauma program in the state, we have a tremendous volume and diversity of trauma experiences.  We have a nationally recognized pre-hospital program in the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services which includes critical care, pediatric, neonatal, and helicopter transport.  In our state of the art simulation center, fellows will learn leadership and communication skills while experiencing high fidelity simulations in a broad array of complex presentations.  Our professionalism lecture series will teach fellows to supervise and educate other trainees as well as prepare them for the complexities of the professional side of medicine.

We emphasize the development of a family environment with our fellows.  We provide group wellness days throughout the year and encourage open lines of communication between fellows, faculty, and program leadership throughout their fellowship years and beyond.  Quarterly journal clubs at faculty homes, with home-cooked meals of course, serve as wonderful opportunities to gather together and grow relationships outside of the hospital.

If you’d like to learn more about becoming a part of our PEM family, we encourage you to apply for fellowship and come see what we have to offer!

Striving,

Matthew Maready, MD
